New forum layout

Postby Revhead Kev on Mon Aug 31, 2009 11:14 pm

Hi admin,

Not sure what changes you have made or what have been "forced upon you" by the board change, but I have afew suggestions which might help with the usability...

1. Can we have the Login moved to the top so that it is easy to get to ?
Scrolling down past all the forum topics each visit might get annoying.

2. Can the chat window have the names list to the side like the old one ?
The new chat window has the list very narrow and under the chat screen which reduces the chat screen size.
This will also help to move the forum threads index higher up the screen instead of having to scroll quite a way down each time to read posts.

3. Can we make the whole board wider ?
It seems the format of the forum is set to a narrow width rather than spreading out to fill the screen like the old forum layout. Means a lot of wasted screen space on the high resolution screens of today's technology.

4. Does the New Post button have to change to birds when the mouse moves over it ?
Just makes the function of the button get lost.

On the plus side ...
I love the colours.
They reflect the colours of the bush and beach, where we all go camping and holidaying :D

I understand any change take a while to adjust to, but some changes can make things more difficult than they need to be and a small adjustment could make things so much easier. Maybe others would like to comment about my suggestions also ?

Just some friendly suggestions.
Thanks,
Kevin.

Hello Revhead
Just above the chat box you will see where it says "log in" Click on there. This will save you scrolling to the bottom. As for the chat room, I agree the names should be on the side list but they do not show up there . You say they are at the bottom of the chat room but I can't see any there. I may play around with different templates to see if they are any better. The board wider? Mine fills to most of my screen with the yellow color filling the rest of the screen. I have the wider flat screen monitor and the edge of the forum is about 1 inch from the edge of my screen. The rest is the yellow color. as for the birds when you hover over the post reply button, yes that is anoying lol but it is in the the design of this template and cant be removed.
I will tweak around with some more templates to see how they look.
The font code on my posts is a result of freeforums newer system not supporting font styles anymore. I used to do all my posts in Comic Sans MS font but the forum no longer supports this. The only way to remove this in my old posts is to go to each post 1 at a time and edit it. Its a pain in the you know what but I may eventually get there.
Thanks For your feedback.

Thanks for the reply.

I see the login at the top.

I also get the yellow at the sides but it probably fills 1/4 of the screen each side.
A side-effect of the fixed width of the page layout is that when people insert pics wider than the page width, they overlap the blue border on the right side as in the new post by AussieUsedCaravans in the following link...
newbie-from-melbourne-t892.html

Oh, in reference to the above, where did our controls go for inserting links and pics, etc ?
Or am I getting this confused with all my other forums and we never had those tools.
Do we all need to revisit our preferences and setup our profiles again ?

Those controls are in the box if you scroll down to "post reply" and type in there. The box below the topic is just for a basic quick reply. I am trying to find out if I can remove the quick reply box but can't seem to find an option for that.
The post you have mentioned above comes up fine on my computer so it must just be your screen resolution.
Your profiles should be fine still but if you like you can go check just to be sure.

I am also slowly going through all my old posts and editing them to remove the font code. There is just too many of them lol.

There is a [Hide] next to the Post a Reply above the quick reply box.
This might be for hiding the box but it does not do anything.

My screen resolution is 1920 x 1200 so plenty big enough for the forum format. Maybe pictures size according t the screen resolution but the forum borders do not ?

Thanks for letting me know about the formatting of your old posts. You only have 282 of them to edit LOL.

Going through the user control panel I have added an avatar which is less than the indicated maximum of 200x200 but it still overlaps the online icon near my name in posts. I'll change my avatar size for now but please keep this in mind with the other picture display overlap problem mentioned earlier.

I have also noticed that in the chat window, individual member chats do not expand the message area if the message is longer than will fit on 2 lines.

Found how to hide quick reply box and to remove birds over "post reply button but now its hard to see the "post reply" button. As for the names on the side of the chat room, this can't be changed. The width of the forum is fine on everyone else's that I have spoke with so it must just be your resolutions of your screen.
I hope this will meet your satisfaction. lol
Thanks for your feedback. We like to keep our members happy if we can. Not like some of those other forums like the X#@%il one. I have heard some complaints about that one.

Sorry a quick edit required here. The "post reply" button still has those squawking birds on it when you hover over it lol.

Thanks.

I'll test out the resolution thing by changing mine to see if anything is different and let you know.
The birds are not a big problem, just annoying as you said.

Always glad to give feedback, and always happy to "go with the flow".

Unfortunately we don't have them in this chat room. In this newer platform of forum they have stopped html code from being able to be used. This means that I can no longer use the old chat room. The only option we have is to use this one which comes with the forum, which don't seem to have any smileys. Or we can use the chat room on the main website at http://www.caravanand4wd.com/chatroom.htm
