Oldie but Goodie

Postby rollywheeler on Wed Nov 05, 2008 5:53 pm

New to the world of caravanning etc. but long of this world
I've got an ambition to spend as much time as I can on the roads and tracks of this superb continent.
Got the tug; a 1985 Landcruiser FJ62 automatic in good nick. Next purchase, a 15foot old style 'van of the more rugged kind, preferably with an attractive, self-sufficient woman afflicted with wanderlust included.
Aiming to get mobile sometime mid-June 2008.
All advice, tips hints and contributions gratefully received.

Gday mate. The old 60 series is a great old truck. I had an 89 model Fj 62 auto and it went everywhere. You just cant break those old things. Good luck finding that self-sufficient woman lol

Thanks Guys for the welcome.
I'm sick of being city-bound, but I'll have to stick with it for now.
Happy; a question about the auto box re. towing: Do you know if an additional trans cooler is really required and if driving in 3rd is recommended?

Quick note to mention name change from Arollywheeler to rollywheeler. Dunno how the "A" got into it. (Haven't been dryfeeding any stock lately 8) )

G'day again rolly. I towed a 16 foot caravan quite often and we used to tow it with the air con on and even up hills we never had any probs with the box gettin hot. Just leave it in drive and let the box do its job and I think you will not be disappointed with the old girls performance. Other than it maybe a little slow up hills lol. They are as hard as nails and it takes a lot to kill them. They were built to last back then. Here is a pic of the two that I have owned. Dont laugh I know this contradicts everything I just said. The auto packed it in on the way home from work one day but hey this was telling me something. "Don't just stop for 1 can for takeaway, stay for the night" lol
These were both mine and both auto.

Thanks, happy.
That puts my mind at rest.
Some folks with later models of 'cruiser and Patrol have bitched about expensive overdrive failures on both manual and auto boxes.

G'day Rolly,

Bit of a belated 'g'day' but one nevertheless.

We come from Guildford WA but moved 18 months ago to Hervey Bay ... real estate prices up, Perth getting too big ... what can I say?!?!?!

Hope you get a lot out of the forum.

8)

Cheers ...

Scol.
