Hi Tim,

I have A 2009 Jayco expanda outback 18ft model. The extra height clearance is really handy. Done a bit of formed dirt road work with no real issues. Great for the price.

The price is good but I would question the structural integrity IF you are planning on some decent offroading.

We have a Heritage and are slowly transforming it to a dirt/off road van. At present we have strengthened the chassis which gave it some lift and put larger tyres on it (stuck with LT's as they are stronger than say Maxxis which I have on the car).

Next to do is checkerplate the lower portion of the van and beef up the suspension. All up it will cost me approx. $5k which IMO is fairly cheap if you compare it to a dedicated offroad van such as a Trakmaster or Bushtracker.

One of the reasons I went with the Heritage and not a Sterling (current model) is because the Heritage has an aluminium frame whereas the current range of Jayco's are 'sandwich packed'. The insulation is great but I would question just how much dirtroading you can do before the chassis twists. This is a common problem with standard factory jayco's that do a considerable amount of offroading.

I guess the question you need to ask yourself is "How much offroading do I intend to do with it". Then make your decision from there.

I'm hoping that by the time I've finished with my van it will be just as good as a dirt road van (NOT offroad) which woud have cost me twice the amount I paid for the van and mods together.

Good luck!
