Boating/fishing when travelling with a van

Postby solo_1 on Sat Nov 29, 2008 11:29 am

Gidday everybody,

I am a mad-keen fisho, and one of the down-sides of vanning is that I can't take my tinny with me as well. I would like some type of car-top or inflatable water craft that will allow me to wet a line or drop a couple of crab pots. I don't want a big vessel, something big enough for one person (and able to be handled by one person) in protected waters is what I am after. I don't have the room for an outboard, so rowed/paddled is the way to go.

I am considering:

1. A conventional canadian-style canoe, carried on roof bars on the Jeep

2. An inflatable canoe

3. A very small, light weight rowing boat (on the roof bars)

4. An inflatable boat

Any suggestions or experience out there????

Thanks,

Mike

Seen a few people with sea kayaks and similar used for fishing. They have some storage compartments and are failr easy to get on and off a roof rack by yourself. Otherwise get a boat loader and roller on the back of your roof rack and you can fit a fair size tinny by yourself.

Mike,

Do you realise there is a 'tinny topper' which as the name implies mounts your tinny on the roof of your car freeing up the tow ball for the van? A few mates of ours have them and they work very well.

Alternatively, you could have a look at 'flat boat'. I seriously considered one of these.

We had a 16ft canadian which was dieal for estuary fishing but I was silly enough to sell it ... they cost nearly $3k now ...

Good luck!

Thanks for taking the trouble to reply. Food for thought! I am still thinking that people-powered craft will win in this application, because I have a VERY small van and no space to carry an outboard.

Thanks again,

Mike

Gday solo and welcome to our site. I have the same problem so I just take a canoe and the kids enjoy playing with it when im not out fishing. I put it onto the roof racks of my 80 series.
